Itinerary – 5-Day Peru Amazon Tour – Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick

Why Do Macaws Eat Clay? : For many years, scientists wondered why macaws gathered at clay licks. Research has now shown two main reasons.
First, the clay provides essential minerals, especially sodium, which is naturally scarce in the Amazon rainforest.
Second, the clay helps neutralize the natural toxins found in many of the seeds and fruits that make up their diet.
This fascinating behavior occurs every morning at sunrise, when different species of macaws and parrots descend to the clay lick before returning to the rainforest to forage.

Day 1: Puerto Maldonado – Tambopata Jungle Lodge .

Upon arrival in Puerto Maldonado, you’ll be transferred by road and river to our jungle lodge.
In the afternoon, enjoy an introductory rainforest hike where you’ll learn about the local flora and fauna, followed by a visit to the observation tower for panoramic views of the Amazon canopy.
In the evening, you may choose to join an optional river excursion to spot black caimans and other nocturnal wildlife.

After breakfast, enjoy a kayaking adventure along the river.
In the evening, head into the rainforest for a guided night walk in search of frogs, insects, tarantulas, and other nocturnal creatures.

The Ayahuasca Spiritual Experience in the Amazon 3 days

The Ayahuasca Spiritual Experience in the Amazon 3 days

The Ayahuasca Spiritual Experience in the Amazon 3 days:   We offer personalized ayahuasca ceremonies tailored to your needs and the type of experience you are seeking. We work with spiritual guides from a local Amazonian community, who share their traditional knowledge and provide respectful support throughout the entire process.

The ceremonies take place at night in a carefully selected natural setting, surrounded by rainforest and in a peaceful space that encourages introspection, meditation, and a personal connection with nature.

Our goal is to provide a well-organized, safe, and authentic experience within the Amazonian cultural context.

The Ayahuasca Spiritual Experience in the Amazon 3 days

Ayahuasca is a traditional Amazonian brew made from the combination of two medicinal plants: the ayahuasca vine

and the chacruna leaves. For centuries, this preparation has been used by Indigenous communities of the Peruvian Amazon as part of sacred ceremonial practices led by experienced traditional healers.

During these ceremonies, some participants report vivid sensory experiences, changes in their perception of time, deep personal reflections, and significant emotional insights. As a result, ayahuasca retreats in the Amazon have

attracted growing interest from travelers seeking opportunities for self-reflection, personal growth, and a deeper connection with nature.

These ceremonies are typically held in the peaceful surroundings of the rainforest under the guidance of traditional facilitators, in an environment that emphasizes cultural respect, preparation, and support throughout the experience.

In collaboration with the Machu Travel Peru team, we share valuable information about ayahuasca in Peru, its cultural significance, and its growing role in wellness tourism in the Peruvian Amazon.

The Amazon Tour in Peru Macaws and Parrots: One of Tambopata’s Great Spectacles :

One of the most impressive experiences is observing macaws and parrots at the famous Amazonian clay licks, known as collpas.

Collpas are places where certain bird species gather to consume clay and other minerals. For travelers, watching dozens or even hundreds of birds arrive at the same location as the rainforest begins to awaken can become one of the most memorable moments of a trip through Madre de Dios.

SERNANP highlights the macaw clay licks as one of Tambopata’s major natural attractions.

If there is one place that often holds a special place in Amazonian itineraries, it is Sandoval Lake.

This beautiful lake is located within Tambopata National Reserve and is surrounded by tropical rainforest, palm trees, and palm swamps. Its waters and surroundings provide an exceptional habitat for observing different wildlife species.

One of its main attractions is the giant river otter, which can be spotted during certain excursions on the lake. SERNANP identifies Sandoval Lake as one of the main natural attractions in Madre de Dios.

Getting to the lake is part of the adventure itself. The journey combines river travel and a walk through the forest, allowing visitors to begin discovering the Amazon even before reaching the lagoon.

Once there, the landscape changes completely: the sounds of insects, birds moving among the trees, and the reflection of vegetation on the water create an atmosphere that is difficult to experience in any other type of destination.
