Discover the Amazon Explorer: A Sustainable Adventure in the Peruvian Amazon

The Amazon Explorer offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the breathtaking biodiversity of the Peruvian Amazon. Nestled in the heart of Madre de Dios, the Bahuaja-Sonene National Park and the surrounding National Reserve are home to some of the world’s most diverse ecosystems, offering travelers an unforgettable blend of nature, adventure, and conservation.

A Groundbreaking Conservation Project in the Peruvian Amazon

Althelia, a global leader in sustainable investment, has made a significant commitment to preserving this vital part of the world. The company has invested US$12 million to help conserve over 570,000 hectares of natural forest within the Bahuaja-Sonene National Park and the National Reserve. This initiative aims to protect one of Peru’s most important biodiversity hotspots through a long-term investment in both conservation and community development.

Partnering with AIDER (the Association for Integral Rural Development), a Peruvian organization with over 27 years of experience in sustainable community projects, and the Ministry of Environment’s (MINAM) National Service for Natural Protected Areas (SERNANP), the project has already seen substantial progress. Althelia’s investment will be spread over 7 years, with funding secured through verified carbon credits that stem from avoided deforestation – a crucial effort to combat the escalating environmental threats facing the region.

A Unique Eco-Tourism Experience: Amazon Explorer

The Amazon Explorer program provides travelers the chance to experience the Amazon Rainforest firsthand while supporting its conservation. Known as the “lungs of the Earth,” the Amazon is vital to global climate regulation, but it is under constant threat from illegal gold mining, slash-and-burn agriculture, and deforestation.

To address these challenges, the REDD+ strategy has been designed, focusing on conservation and sustainable local development. The strategy has been validated under the prestigious Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and the Carbon, Community and Biodiversity (CCB) Standards at the Gold level. This framework will help ensure the long-term protection of the Bahuaja-Sonene National Park, its diverse wildlife, and the communities that rely on its resources.

Empowering Local Communities: Sustainable Cocoa Farming

The Althelia investment goes beyond forest protection. It is also a commitment to improving the lives of local farmers. More than 1,100 smallholder farmers living near the protected areas will benefit from a series of sustainable agricultural improvements. The initiative will help establish 4,000 hectares of agroforestry systems, cultivating fine and aromatic cocoa trees—an environmentally-friendly and economically viable crop.

In addition to boosting sustainable cocoa production, the project will establish a smallholder cooperative to enhance the efficiency of cocoa harvesting, processing, and commercialization. When fully scaled, the project is expected to produce 3,200 tonnes per year of certified zero-deforestation organic and Fairtrade cocoa, providing a sustainable source of income for farmers while ensuring the long-term environmental health of the region.

A Commitment to Climate Change Mitigation

The project’s environmental impact is significant. By reducing deforestation and promoting sustainable land-use practices, the partnership between AIDER and Althelia is expected to reduce 450,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year. This will play a key role in climate change mitigation, while generating co-benefits that protect wildlife, support local communities, and maintain the Amazon’s vital ecosystems.
