Day 1: Arrival in Puerto Maldonado & Journey to Tambopata Reserve

Your unforgettable Amazon adventure begins the moment you arrive in Puerto Maldonado. After your arrival at the bus terminal or airport, our team will greet you warmly and escort you to our office for a quick registration. Feel free to store any heavy luggage before setting off on your Amazon Explorer experience.

The adventure kicks off with a scenic 4×4 ride from Puerto Maldonado to Puerto Tambopata, where you’ll board a traditional rowing boat for a peaceful journey along the river. Watch for wildlife like capybaras, turtles, exotic birds, and the elusive jaguar resting along the banks.

Upon arriving at your lodge, enjoy a refreshing Amazonian drink before settling into your comfortable room. After a delicious lunch, we’ll head out on an afternoon guided walk through the lush primary rainforest. This hike offers a chance to immerse yourself in the sounds and sights of the jungle, where towering trees and diverse wildlife surround you.

As the sun sets, we’ll embark on a thrilling boat ride to spot nocturnal creatures like caimans, capybaras, and perhaps even a prowling feline predator. The symphony of jungle sounds creates an atmosphere like no other as we return to the lodge for a restful night in the heart of the Amazon.

Day 2: Macaw Clay Lick & Exploration of Tambopata

Start your day with an early breakfast, then we’ll journey by boat up the Tambopata River, enjoying the serene beauty of the Amazon as the sun rises. Along the way, keep an eye out for capybaras, caimans, and maybe even a jaguar on the riverbanks.

Our destination today is the Collpa de Guacamayos (Macaw Clay Lick), a stunning natural phenomenon where hundreds of vibrant parrots and macaws gather to feast on mineral-rich clay. This incredible spectacle, known as geophagy, is vital for these birds to detoxify and supplement their diet. Watching this colorful gathering is one of the highlights of the trip and a rare opportunity to witness the region’s extraordinary biodiversity.

After returning to the lodge for a delicious lunch, the afternoon offers two exciting options: a relaxing kayak ride down the river or a guided walk through both primary and secondary forests. Each path offers a unique opportunity to encounter more of the incredible wildlife that thrives in this pristine environment.

As the day winds down, we’ll venture into the jungle trips once more for a night walk, where you’ll hear the jungle’s nocturnal symphony—chirping insects, croaking toads, and the distant calls of monkeys. After this adventure, we’ll return to the lodge to rest and reflect on the day’s experiences.

Day 3: Piranha Fishing, Jungle Hikes .

Wake up to the natural sounds of the rainforest, including the calls of howler monkeys and the songs of tropical birds. After breakfast, we’ll head out on an outboard boat for a 30-minute journey downstream to the Gato String. Here, you’ll try your hand at artisanal fishing, catching local species such as catfish, paco, and sardines. It’s an authentic experience that brings you closer to the way the locals live in harmony with the river.

Next, we’ll explore the jungle, home to a fascinating array of wildlife.

Your guide will share insights into the ecosystem and point out fascinating species along the way. After this, we’ll visit a nearby stream for a refreshing swim in its crystal-clear waters, surrounded by stunning jungle landscapes.

In the afternoon, we’ll embark on a hike to the Mammal Clay Lick, where we might encounter howler monkeys, wild pigs, and even deer. These mammals, along with various birds, visit the lick to consume mineral-rich clay, essential for their digestion. Watching these animals in their natural habitat is a truly magical experience.

In the evening, return to the lodge for a delicious dinner, followed by a bonfire where your guide will share captivating stories and legends of the Amazon jungle. This is the perfect time to ask questions and reflect on your adventure before retiring to your room for a peaceful night’s rest.

Day 4: Return to Puerto Maldonado

On your final day, we’ll wake up early for breakfast, followed by some free time to relax, take photos, or soak in the surroundings one last time. After packing your bags, we’ll board a boat for the journey back down the Tambopata River to the port, where your transportation will be waiting to take you back to Puerto Maldonado.

Depending on your flight schedule, we’ll ensure you arrive at the airport with plenty of time to check in—at least two hours before your flight.

What is the location, extension and limits of the Tambopata National Reserve?

The RNTAMB is located southeast of the Madre de Dios Region, in the Tambopata and Inambari districts of the province of Tambopata, on an area of 274,690.00 ha, as shown below:

• PROTECTED NATURAL AREA: Tambopata National Reserve.
• DISTRICT: Tambopata Inambari.
• PROVINCE: Tambopata.
• REGION: Madre de Dios.

The RNTAMB limits by the north with the province of Tambopata of the Madre de Dios Region; in the east with Bolivia; to the south with the Bahuaja Sonene National Park and to the west with the Kotsimba Native Community.

Specific diversity in the Tambopata National Reserve:

Research conducted between the 70s and 80s recorded more than 570 species of birds, 1, 200 butterflies and many other groups of animals in tambopata. Over 150 types of trees were found over an area of 0.01 km 2, becoming one of the World Centers for Plant Diversity identified by IUCN and WWF (TReeS, 1989).

In flora, 1,713 species belonging to 654 have been registered genera of 145 families being 1,637 of flowering plants (127 families and 622 genera) and 76 ferns (18 families and 32 genera) in the tambopata reserve.

In fauna, 1,260 species, 93 species of amphibians, 648 species of birds, 108 species of mammals, 88 species of reptiles, and 323 species of fish have been recorded in the reserve of tambopata.
