OVERVIEW

Pick-up and Transfer:
You’ll be welcomed and picked up from the Puerto Maldonado airport or coach terminal by a representative.
Transfer to the tour office where you can leave unnecessary large baggage but keep a backpack for personal items.

Boat Ride Down the Madre de Dios River:
Transfer to a local port and board a motorboat.
Enjoy a scenic journey down the Madre de Dios River, observing various mammal species along the way.

Trek to Sandoval Lake:
Reach the checkpoint of the Sandoval Lake Reserve and pass through.
Embark on a 3 km trek to reach Sandoval Lake.

Exploration of Sandoval Lake:
Take a canoe to explore Sandoval Lake and accommodate at the lake.
After lunch, sail the lake to observe its inhabitants including giant river otters, black caimans, and various bird species.

Return Journey:
Board a canoe again to sail back over Sandoval Lake.
Walk to the checkpoint and sail the Madre de Dios River by a motorboat towards Puerto Maldonado.
Pick up baggage from the office.
Transfer to either the airport or coach terminal for departure.

Full-Day Adventure at Sandoval Lake – A Journey into the Heart of the Amazon

Introduction : Embark on an unforgettable full-day adventure to Sandoval Lake, located in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, wildlife photographer, or simply someone looking to experience the untouched beauty of the Amazon rainforest, this guided tour promises a day filled with stunning wildlife encounters and breathtaking scenery.

Pickup and Transfer to Sandoval Lake : Your adventure begins as our representative greets you at the Puerto Maldonado airport or bus station. We’ll take you to our office, where you can leave any large luggage not required for the trip (remember to bring a small backpack for your essentials). Afterward, we head to the local port to board a motorboat for a scenic journey down the Madre de Dios River, where wildlife sightings await.

Wildlife Spotting on the River Journey

As we cruise down the river, keep your eyes peeled for a wide variety of Amazonian wildlife. You may spot turtles, monkeys, lizards, caimans, and a diverse range of birds such as herons, kingfishers, and more. This is your chance to immerse yourself in the sounds of the rainforest and catch glimpses of its rich, dynamic ecosystem.

Arriving at Sandoval Lake Reserve : After reaching the Sandoval Lake Reserve, we’ll pass through a checkpoint and begin a scenic 3 km (1.5-hour) walk through the dense rainforest. Along the way, your naturalist guide will point out the incredible flora and fauna that make this region so unique.

Once we reach Sandoval Lake, we’ll board a canoe to navigate its peaceful waters, offering a front-row seat to witness its diverse wildlife up close, including the playful giant river otters, black caimans, and prehistoric birds like the shansho. Keep an eye out for other fascinating species such as herons, cormorants, and kingfishers.

Lunch and Exploration :After a delicious lunch at the lodge, we’ll set out again in our canoe, this time paddling along the lake’s calm waters to observe the rich wildlife that calls this area home. From tropical birds to sloths and monkeys, there’s always something exciting to discover.

Evening Caiman Observation

As evening falls, we return to the lake for a special caiman observation tour. Caimans are nocturnal creatures, making this the perfect opportunity to observe them in their natural environment under the starlit sky. Your expert naturalist guide will share fascinating insights into the behavior of these elusive reptiles and the unique dynamics of the Amazon rainforest after dark.

Return to Puerto Maldonado :After a full day of exploration, we’ll return to the lodge to board a canoe back across Sandoval Lake, followed by a walk to the checkpoint. From there, we’ll hop on a motorboat to navigate the Madre de Dios River back to Puerto Maldonado. Upon arrival, we’ll retrieve your luggage and transfer you back to the airport or bus terminal, marking the end of your incredible Amazon adventure.

  • Mosquito repellent (DEET 35 recommended as a MINIMUM!!),

  • Long cotton trousers,
  • Cotton long socks (to be put into your trousers),
