ITINERARY

3-Day Amazon Tour: Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick, Sandoval Lake & Yacumama Lake

This 3-day Tambopata Amazon tour begins in Puerto Maldonado and combines Amazon river navigation, rainforest hikes, wildlife observation, and unique experiences at some of the main natural attractions in the Madre de Dios region. It is an excellent option for travelers who want to discover the Peruvian Amazon through a short but complete adventure.

Day 1: Puerto Maldonado – Tambopata National Reserve and Amazon Rainforest Hike/Night Safari.

Arrival in Puerto Maldonado and Introduction to the Peruvian Amazon

Your adventure begins in Puerto Maldonado, the gateway to the extraordinary Peruvian Amazon. You will be picked up from the bus station or airport and transferred to our office, where you will receive a brief orientation about the itinerary, safety recommendations, and the activities included during your experience in the Tambopata National Reserve.

If you are traveling with large luggage, we recommend leaving it at our office and taking only the essentials for the expedition. This makes the journey into the rainforest more comfortable and practical.

After the orientation, we will begin our journey by tourist vehicle to the Tambopata National Reserve. The drive takes approximately 50 minutes and allows you to see the urban landscape gradually give way to lush Amazonian vegetation.

Upon reaching the main Tambopata port, we will board a boat and continue our journey along the river to the lodge. This boat ride is part of the adventure and provides our first opportunities to enjoy the rainforest landscape, riverbanks, and some Amazonian wildlife.

Once we arrive at the lodge, we will settle into our rooms and enjoy our first lunch, depending on our arrival time.

In the afternoon, we will take an introductory hike through the Tambopata rainforest. Accompanied by our guide, we will explore the forest trails and learn about the plants, trees, and ecosystems that make this region one of the most biodiverse areas in Peru.

During the hike, we may have opportunities to look for different species of birds, amphibians, mammals, reptiles, and insects, always respecting their natural habitat. Wildlife sightings depend on forest conditions, weather, and animal activity, so every excursion offers a different experience.

This first day provides an excellent introduction to Amazonian life and an opportunity to begin discovering the sounds, scents, and landscapes of the Tambopata National Reserve.

Accommodation: Tambopata rainforest lodge
Meals: Lunch and dinner.

Day 2: Macaw Clay Lick – Lake Yacumama – Piranha Fishing and Night Caiman Spotting.

Amazon Sunrise and Visit to the Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick

The second day begins very early, at approximately 4:30 a.m., to enjoy one of the most impressive experiences of our Tambopata tour: a visit to the famous Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick, one of the most important places for observing macaws and parrots in the Peruvian Amazon.

We will navigate for approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes along the Tambopata River as the rainforest awakens. Traveling early in the morning creates a special atmosphere and, with some luck, we may observe wildlife along the riverbanks, including capybaras, caimans, river birds, and other Amazonian animals. Sightings of species such as tapirs or large cats are possible, but they depend entirely on wildlife activity and the conditions of the day.

Macaws and Parrots at the Amazonian Clay Lick

Upon reaching the Chuncho Clay Lick, we will find a strategic viewing location and wait for the parrots and macaws to arrive. Gradually, the forest begins to fill with sounds and movement as different species approach the clay wall.

The Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick is renowned for the large concentration of parrots and macaws that visit these natural clay deposits. During the activity, we may observe several species of parrots and macaws and, depending on the conditions, large groups of birds gathering in front of the clay lick.

One of the most exciting moments is the arrival of brightly colored macaws, including species displaying striking red, green, blue, and yellow plumage. The birds consume small amounts of clay, a behavior associated with mineral intake and other potential benefits related to their diet.

Watching hundreds of birds flying around the clay lick while their calls blend with the sounds of the rainforest is one of the most memorable experiences of any trip to Tambopata.

After enjoying the birdwatching experience and taking photographs, we will begin our return journey to the lodge for breakfast and some time to rest.

Return Toward Puerto Maldonado and Visit to Yacumama Lake

After visiting the clay lick, we will continue our journey toward Puerto Maldonado and proceed with our adventure at Yacumama Lake.

This natural environment offers a fascinating contrast to the morning’s experience. Here, the pace becomes more peaceful as we leave behind the activity of the birds and enjoy a tranquil landscape surrounded by rainforest vegetation and water.

Navigation and exploration around the lake allow us to appreciate the richness of Amazonian ecosystems while searching for different species of wildlife.

Recreational Fishing in the Amazon

One of the activities included in the program is recreational fishing, an experience that allows travelers to enjoy the Amazonian environment in a relaxed way.

Beyond fishing itself, this activity provides an opportunity to enjoy the scenery, learn about some of the fish species found in the region, and experience one of the traditional activities associated with the rivers and waterways of the Amazon.

It is an ideal moment to relax, enjoy the sounds of the forest, and appreciate the surrounding natural environment.

Nocturnal Caiman Search

When night falls, the Amazon rainforest completely changes.

We will take a night excursion to search for caimans in suitable areas. Accompanied by our guides, we will carefully explore the aquatic environment using lights to try to detect the reflection of the caimans’ eyes.

The nighttime experience allows us to discover a different side of the rainforest. Many animals become more active after sunset, while others remain hidden among the vegetation.

During the excursion, we may also hear the sounds of the nocturnal forest and, depending on the conditions, observe different species of insects, amphibians, nocturnal birds, and other animals.

After the activity, we will return to the lodge to rest.

Day 3: Exploring the Amazon – Visit Lake Sandoval – Puerto Maldonado Airport.

Exploring Sandoval Lake : The final day of our 3-day Tambopata tour is dedicated to one of the most renowned destinations in the Peruvian Amazon: Sandoval Lake, located within the Tambopata National Reserve.

To reach the lake, we will combine boat navigation with a hike through the rainforest. The journey itself is part of the experience, allowing us to observe the structure of the tropical forest up close and learn about some of its different ecosystems.

The trail leads us toward the lake, where the landscape transforms into a beautiful combination of water, rainforest, and Amazonian vegetation.

A Paradise for Wildlife Observation

Sandoval Lake is famous for its remarkable wildlife diversity and is one of the most attractive destinations for travelers interested in observing animals in the Peruvian Amazon.

During the excursion, we may search for different species of birds, monkeys, turtles, caimans, and other wildlife.

One of the most anticipated encounters is the possibility of seeing the giant otter. These animals are emblematic of Amazonian aquatic ecosystems, and when they appear, they can become one of the most memorable moments of the entire journey.

As with all wildlife observation in a natural environment, sightings depend on animal behavior and the conditions of the day.

Sandoval Lake Navigation and Photography

Navigating across the lake allows us to enjoy a different perspective of the rainforest.

As we move across the water, we can admire the vegetation reflected on the surface while keeping our senses alert to the sounds and movements of wildlife.

For travelers interested in photography, this is one of the most special moments of the program. The landscape provides opportunities to photograph birds, monkeys, reptiles, tropical vegetation, and panoramic views of the lake.

After completing the excursion, we will begin our return journey to Puerto Maldonado.

Once back in the city, we will provide the corresponding transfer to the airport or bus station according to each traveler’s departure schedule.

This marks the end of our three-day adventure through the Peruvian Amazon, combining wildlife, rainforest exploration, river journeys, birdwatching, photography, and unforgettable natural landscapes in the Tambopata region.

Wildlife sightings depend on natural factors such as weather, season, and animal behavior. For this reason, every rainforest experience is unique.
