Why Do Macaws Visit Clay Licks?

The clay itself is not just dirt—it’s a crucial component of the macaw’s diet and survival. In fact, these birds consume the clay to neutralize toxins found in their natural food sources.

Additionally, the clay helps balance their digestive systems by providing essential minerals and electrolytes that they

can’t obtain from fruit and seeds alone.

Thus, the clay lick serves a crucial detoxification function. What’s more, the minerals—such as calcium and sodium—

are important for the macaws‘ overall health, making the ritual vital to their well-being.
