ITINERARY

5 Days Family Adventure in the Peruvian Amazon

Day 1 – Arrival at Puerto Maldonado • 4×4 Trek to Lodge

Highlights: Wild drive + River launch + First Amazon encounter

Your guide will greet you at Puerto Maldonado Airport (or bus terminal) and transport you to our downtown office—just 5 minutes away. Here, we’ll finalize your registration and stock up on essentials like batteries, repellent, and ponchos.

The 4×4 jungle journey begins! We traverse winding rainforest roads for about two hours toward the Philadelphia community. At the riverbank, you’ll transfer to a motorized boat and glide along the serene Tambopata River, arriving at your first Amazon lodge.

After settling into your room, stretch your legs on an introductory rainforest walk with our naturalist guide. Discover the wonders of jungle flora and fauna—it’s a fantastic family photo op! Return for an Amazon‑style dinner, then embark on your first night walk, spotting nocturnal creatures like caiman, tree frogs, insects, and owls.

Why families love it: Gentle immersion into the Amazon, kid‑friendly evening walk, and cozy lodge introduction.

Day 2 – Sunrise Macaw Spectacle at Chuncho Clay Lick

Dawn river ride • Colorful macaw show • Transfer to Amazon Lodge Tambopata

Rise before sunrise at 5 a.m. to board your boat upriver to the famed Chuncho macaw clay lick. As the sky ignites, listen for the flapping wings and chatter of scarlet macaws, parrots, and parakeets gathering to consume mineral-rich clay. This 5 to 6 a.m. display lasts until around 11 a.m.—a stunning spectacle that captivates both children and adults. Your breakfast awaits riverside, amid the vibrant avian ballet.

Post‑lunch, return to Puerto Maldonado and journey by boat (about 10 minutes) along the mighty Madre de Dios River to Amazon Lodge Tambopata—your next jungle retreat. Evening brings dinner and a night walk for more nocturnal wildlife viewing.

Why it works: Combines a mesmerizing wildlife experience with a scenic lodge transfer and continued family exploration.

Day 3 – Lago Sandoval Discovery & Family Lodge Experience

Highlights: Reserve immersion • Canoe wildlife tour • Night safari

After breakfast, head by boat along Madre de Dios and then motor up to Lake Sandoval. Enter the heart of the Tambopata National Reserve and hike through a biodiverse terra firme forest for about one hour.

Hop into a canoe to silently glide across Lake Sandoval—expect sightings of giant otters, turtles, herons, hoatzins, caiman, and capybaras. Lunch riverside at a charming family-run lodge built by the Mejía family. Free time for a safe swim in the calm lake waters.

As dusk falls, we’ll hike jungle trails again to seek out nocturnal wildlife—maybe insects, frogs, or elusive creatures you haven’t spotted yet. Spend the night in this intimate, eco-friendly lodge.

Why it shines: Balances exploration with family comfort, wildlife viewing, and cultural connection.

Day 4 – Palm Tree  Macaw -Paddle  in the Lake .

Highlights: Paddle canoe at dawn • Palm clay lick • Jungle trekking

Begin early with a paddle canoe ride across Lake Sandoval. Reach the palm clay lick, where colorful macaws feast on dried palm fruit—a spectacular photo moment! Afterwards, enjoy breakfast at the family lodge, then walk jungle trails to deepen your understanding of Amazon biodiversity.

Post‑lunch, return to Lodge. Afternoon and evening are again filled with rainforest night walks and a comforting homemade dinner under jungle sounds.

“Palm clay lick,” “family rainforest hike,” “Amazon night walk.”

Day 5 – Puerto Maldonado – Canopy Adventure Departure

Highlights: Canopy towers & bridges  • Transfer home

After breakfast, we return to Puerto Maldonado. We’ll take our canoe to the main port. Then we’ll hike 3 kilometers to the Madre de Dios River, where our outboard motorboat awaits. We’ll arrive and stop for adventure activities like ziplining and a canopy walkway. Afterward, we’ll return to Puerto Maldonado and then transfer to the airport or bus terminal.

Tambopata Jungle Trek to Sandoval Lake: A Raw, Wild Amazon Adventure

Tambopata Jungle Trek to Sandoval Lake | Amazon Wildlife Experience
Meta Description: Discover the untamed beauty of the Tambopata Jungle Trek to Sandoval Lake. Rare wildlife encounters, challenging photography, and unforgettable Amazon adventures await.

Why Tambopata is Unlike Anywhere Else on Earth

If you’re dreaming of jaguars lounging on riverbanks, colorful macaws filling the sky, or mysterious shadows moving through the dense Amazon foliage, the Tambopata Jungle Trek to Sandoval Lake is your ultimate adventure. But temper your expectations: this isn’t a zoo or a safari park—it’s the untamed heart of the Peruvian Amazon.

Unlike Africa’s open savannahs, Amazon wildlife encounters are fleeting, elusive, and often filtered through layers of lush green vegetation. And that’s what makes them magical.

Real Jaguar Encounters: Rare, But Unforgettable

Yes, jaguars live here. Yes, people do see them. But it’s rare and thrilling precisely because it’s not staged.
Here are just a few real-life jaguar encounters near Tambopata Research Center:

  • A jaguar was spotted eating a tapir—viewed for 15 minutes at just 18 meters by 8 lucky guests.
  • Another was seen napping on the river beach, causing staff and visitors to rush for a glimpse.
  • One even walked straight into a group of hikers before vanishing into the jungle.
  • Some of these moments have been captured by BBC film crews, adding to Tambopata’s wild reputation.

Amazon Photography: Paradise with a Price

Calling all photographers: this is not an easy shoot. But that’s exactly why it’s rewarding.

 Environmental Challenges

  • Humidity is brutal—protect your gear with dry bags and desiccant packs.
  • Sudden rain and river splashes demand waterproof cases and Zorb-it moisture control products.
  • Insect repellent can even damage plastic, so take extra care.

Camera Gear Recommendations

  • Lenses over 300mm are essential for full-frame wildlife shots.
  • 500mm+ lenses are ideal for photographing birds at the macaw clay lick.
  • Macro lenses with flash are necessary for capturing tiny Amazon critters.
  • A tripod is a must for low-light jungle scenes and bird photography.

Expect long waits, patience, and sometimes… no shot at all. The pros you’ve seen—like Franz Lanting or Heiko Beyer—spend months in the jungle with custom-built rigs and support teams. Your 4-day trek won’t replicate those conditions, but magic still happens.

Biodiversity Beyond Imagination

You’re walking through a living cathedral of biodiversity. In just one horizontal meter of forest, you may encounter dozens of species, all different from those a meter away.

  • Expect to see macaws, giant river otters, harpy eagles, tapirs, and with luck, the elusive jaguar.
  • Don’t expect them to stand still. Wildlife here leaps, flies, slithers, or flees—often within seconds and at up to 40 meters overhead.

Sandoval Lake: A Hidden Gem in the Amazon

Located within Tambopata National Reserve, Sandoval Lake is a prime destination on the jungle trek. Its still waters are home to black caimans, giant river otters, and hundreds of bird species.

  • Canoe rides offer up-close sightings of lake-dwelling wildlife.
  • Sunset over the lake offers breathtaking photography opportunities (bring your tripod!).

Travel Tips for an Unforgettable Amazon Experience

  • Come with curiosity. Don’t expect Disneyland—expect real nature.
  • Be prepared, physically and mentally. The jungle is hot, humid, and full of surprises.
  • Hire experienced guides. Their eyes will spot wildlife that yours won’t.
  • Don’t stress about photography—sometimes the best memories aren’t captured on camera.

Final Thoughts: Come for the Wild, Stay for the Wonder

The Tambopata Jungle Trek to Sandoval Lake isn’t about ticking species off a list. It’s about surrendering to a world richer, wilder, and more mysterious than most have ever imagined. Your most unforgettable moments may be the ones you didn’t expect at all.
