Itinerary – 5-Day Peru Amazon Tour – Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick

Why Do Macaws Eat Clay? : For many years, scientists wondered why macaws gathered at clay licks. Research has now shown two main reasons.
First, the clay provides essential minerals, especially sodium, which is naturally scarce in the Amazon rainforest.
Second, the clay helps neutralize the natural toxins found in many of the seeds and fruits that make up their diet.
This fascinating behavior occurs every morning at sunrise, when different species of macaws and parrots descend to the clay lick before returning to the rainforest to forage.
