Explore The Peruvian Amazon 3-day
Visit to Sandoval Lake: Adventure and Nature in Tambopata National Reserve
Discover the magic of the Peruvian Amazon on an exciting expedition through Tambopata National Reserve, one of the most fascinating nature destinations in the Madre de Dios region. During this program, you will have the opportunity to navigate Amazonian rivers, hike through the rainforest, observe wildlife in its natural habitat, discover gigantic Brazil nut trees, and enjoy a variety of thrilling adventure activities.
One of the highlights of the expedition will be our visit to Sandoval Lake, a spectacular body of water surrounded by the lush vegetation of the Tambopata rainforest and home to numerous species of birds, monkeys, reptiles, and the impressive giant river otters.
Day 1: Excursion to Sandoval Lake
Our adventure begins with an approximately 30-minute boat ride along the Madre de Dios River, enjoying the spectacular Amazonian scenery until we reach the entrance checkpoint of Tambopata National Reserve.
From there, we will begin an approximately one-hour hike along rainforest trails. During the walk, we will keep an eye out for monkeys, tropical birds, insects, and other wildlife, while discovering the incredible diversity of flora that characterizes this ecosystem.
The trail will lead us to one of the most iconic destinations in the Peruvian Amazon: Sandoval Lake.
Boat Ride on Sandoval Lake
Upon reaching the lake, we will board a small boat for a peaceful journey across its waters. This experience will allow us to explore different areas of the lake and observe wildlife from a privileged perspective.
With a little luck, we may encounter:
- Different species of monkeys.
- Amazonian birds and colorful macaws.
- Taricayas, or Amazon river turtles.
- Herons and other aquatic birds.
- Caimans.
- The famous giant river otters.
Sandoval Lake is one of the best places to connect with nature and experience the incredible biodiversity of the Madre de Dios rainforest.
Lunch in the Heart of the Amazon
After exploring the lake, we will enjoy lunch in a privileged natural setting. We will have time to rest and recharge before continuing our exploration.
Afterward, we will take one final trip around Sandoval Lake, remaining alert for new opportunities to observe animals in the wild and enjoy the breathtaking Amazonian scenery.
Sunset over the Tambopata River
On our way back, we will have the opportunity to witness one of the region’s most beautiful natural spectacles: sunset over the Amazonian rivers.
The colors of the sky are reflected on the water as the rainforest begins to change its rhythm. It will be the perfect ending to our first day of adventure before arriving at our lodge located in the surroundings of Tambopata National Reserve.
Day 2: Rainforest Hike
The second day will be dedicated to discovering some of the Amazon’s most important natural treasures.
The Tambopata region is renowned for its enormous Brazil nut trees (Bertholletia excelsa), a species that plays a fundamental role in the ecosystem and in the lives of local communities that sustainably harvest its nuts.
We will take an approximately 2- to 3-hour hike along well-preserved trails, venturing deep into the tropical forest to get a close look at these impressive trees and understand their importance to Amazonian biodiversity.
During the hike, we may observe a variety of plant and animal species. Among them is the agouti, a small mammal that plays an important role in seed dispersal within the forest.
We will also keep our eyes on the treetops in search of macaws and other Amazonian birds, which often move between palm trees and the canopy.
Every step through the rainforest will be an opportunity to discover something new.
Piranha Fishing at Yacumama Lake : After lunch, we will continue our adventure toward Yacumama Lake, a perfect place to enjoy a different kind of rainforest experience.
Here, we will have the opportunity to take part in an entertaining piranha fishing activity, as well as observe caimans, green parrots, wild ducks, and other species that inhabit Amazonian aquatic environments.
And as the day begins to come to an end, we will once again have the chance to enjoy one of Tambopata’s great attractions: a spectacular sunset over Yacumama Lake.
The reflection of the sky on the water, surrounded by tropical forest, creates the perfect setting for photographs and unforgettable memories.
Night Walk in Tambopata : When night falls, the rainforest reveals a completely different side.
After dinner, we will take a guided night walk around the lodge to discover the fascinating wildlife that emerges after sunset.
During this activity, we may look for:
- Spiders and tarantulas.
- Isulas, or giant bullet ants.
- Nocturnal insects.
- Amphibians.
- Small reptiles.
- Different species of plants and forest organisms.
The night walk is one of the most exciting activities for those who want to experience the Amazon rainforest after dark.
Day 3: Extreme Sports and Adventure in Tambopata
Our third day will combine nature, exploration, and adrenaline.
We will navigate approximately 40 minutes along the Madre de Dios River until we reach Monkey Island, where we will have the opportunity to observe some of the most representative primate species of the area.
Depending on the conditions and the animals’ activity, we may encounter capuchin monkeys, squirrel monkeys, saddleback tamarins, and spider monkeys, always respecting their natural space and behavior.
Kayaking on the Madre de Dios River : We will then continue our adventure with a kayaking experience on the river. This activity will allow us to experience the Amazon from the water and enjoy a completely different perspective of the landscape.
Paddling through the rainforest creates the perfect combination of adventure and contact with nature.
After lunch, we will have some time to rest and prepare for the afternoon’s adrenaline-filled activities.
Observation Tower and Suspension Bridge: The adventure will continue with a climb up an approximately 30-meter-high observation tower.
From the top, we will enjoy an impressive panoramic view of the Amazon rainforest and see how the vegetation stretches all the way to the horizon.
We will then cross an approximately 120-meter-long suspension bridge, an exciting experience for those looking to experience the rainforest from above.
190-Meter Zipline: Pure Adrenaline: To end our adventure on a high note, one of the most exciting moments of the program awaits us: an approximately 190-meter zipline.
