SERVICES
The Amazon Tour in Peru 6 days
Day 1: Arrival in Puerto Maldonado – Tambopata Rainforest Lodge
Upon arrival at the airport or bus station, you will be transferred to our office for a final briefing about your tour before departing on your Amazon adventure. If you are carrying bulky luggage, we recommend reorganizing your belongings, storing anything you will not need, and bringing only the essentials for the trip.
We will travel by land in a 4×4 vehicle for approximately 2 hours until we reach the banks of the Tambopata River. (Traveling entirely by river takes more than 6 hours; this is for informational purposes only.) From there, we will take a motorized boat to Monte Amazónico – Tambopata Lodge.
Upon arrival, you will receive a warm welcome and enjoy breakfast or lunch, depending on your arrival time.
In the afternoon, we will take an introductory walk through the tropical rainforest, where you will have the opportunity to observe wildlife in its natural habitat, including amphibians, mammals, reptiles, insects, and many other fascinating species.
Day 2: Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick – Kayaking Adventure on the Tambopata River
We will wake up very early at 4:30 a.m. to begin an unforgettable boat journey to the largest macaw clay lick in the world, El Chuncho. The trip takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes by boat. Along the way, you may spot capybaras, the largest rodents in the world, tapirs, and even the most iconic South American feline, the jaguar. Many of our guests have been fortunate enough to capture photographic evidence of encounters with these magnificent mammals.
Upon arriving at the clay lick, you will witness hundreds of parrots from up to 11 different species gathering on the riverbank to feed on mineral-rich clay. We will settle into our seats and wait for one of the most spectacular bird displays in the world to begin.
Soon after, three species of brilliantly colored macaws arrive, including Red-and-Green Macaws and Blue-and-Yellow Macaws. These birds consume the clay as part of their daily diet to neutralize toxins and obtain essential minerals. On an active day, you may witness hundreds of these magnificent birds flying overhead—a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Afterward, we will return to the lodge for breakfast and some time to relax.
Later, accompanied by our guide, we will visit the botanical garden, where you can learn about local fruit trees, timber species, and medicinal plants native to the region.
Lunch will be served at the lodge.
In the afternoon, you will have the opportunity to kayak along the Tambopata River. Gliding quietly through the water allows for excellent wildlife viewing, including some of the larger species found within the Tambopata Reserve.
The evening is free for relaxation, or you may choose to participate in an optional night walk through the rainforest.
Day 3: Monkey Island & Caiman Search
After a hearty breakfast, we will travel back toward Puerto Maldonado and continue by boat for approximately one hour to our jungle lodge, where you will be welcomed with a refreshing tropical fruit drink from the region.
Following a short rest, we will embark on a two-hour guided hike through the dense rainforest. Your expert guide will lead you along jungle trails where you can observe towering trees more than 500 years old and a wide variety of wildlife, including toucans, oropendolas, parrots, monkeys, snakes, butterflies, and many other species.
This excursion offers an immersive experience within the Tambopata National Reserve, a protected area covering approximately 278,000 hectares of Amazon rainforest.
After lunch, we will visit Monkey Island, located across the Madre de Dios River from the lodge. Here, you may encounter several monkey species, including Brown Capuchin Monkeys, Squirrel Monkeys, and Saddleback Tamarins.
In the late afternoon, we will head out in search of caimans. White caimans are often found resting on the sandy banks of the Madre de Dios River, making this an exciting wildlife observation opportunity. Capybaras are also frequently seen in the area.
Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.
Day 4: Lake Sandoval Exploration
After breakfast, we will hike approximately 3 kilometers through dense rainforest to reach the spectacular Lake Sandoval, one of the largest oxbow lakes within the Tambopata National Reserve and home to piranhas.
We will explore the lake by rowboat, offering excellent opportunities to observe a wide variety of wildlife, including shanshos (Hoatzins), jacanas, herons, cormorants, vultures, howler monkeys, brown capuchin monkeys, tamarins, and sloths.
With a bit of luck, we may encounter a family of Giant River Otters, an endangered species that can grow up to two meters (over six feet) in length.
After our lake excursion, we will return to the lodge for a traditional Amazonian lunch.
In the evening, there will be another opportunity for a rainforest walk, where you can observe the incredible diversity of insects, amphibians, reptiles, and other nocturnal creatures.
Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.
Day 5: Amazon Adventure Expedition – Canopy Walkway, Zipline & Kayaking
Wake up early to experience one of the most magical moments of the journey: the Canopy Walkway, a network of suspension bridges located 30 meters (98 feet) above the forest floor. From this unique vantage point, you will witness the rainforest awakening with vibrant colors, sounds, and life.
You may observe toucans, macaws, and oropendolas flying among the treetops. Many travelers describe this experience as truly inspiring.
After breakfast, prepare for an adrenaline-filled adventure on the Amazon Zipline. Glide through the rainforest canopy and experience the thrill of soaring above the jungle. All activities are conducted according to strict safety standards and supervised by qualified instructors.
Following lunch and some relaxation time, you will cross the river by kayak, offering a peaceful and intimate way to explore the waterways while observing wildlife.
To conclude the day, you will participate in a traditional Amazon fishing experience, where you may catch local species such as catfish while enjoying a spectacular sunset over the rainforest.
Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.
