Collecting Chestnuts in Tambopata Tours
Chestnuts—commonly known as Brazil nuts—have strong demand in both local and international markets. They play a vital role in the natural conservation chain, as Brazil nut trees only produce within healthy, intact forest ecosystems. In Peru, dense stands of these trees are known as castañales (chestnut forests), and they are managed through forest concessions granted by the Peruvian Forest Service.
In the Madre de Dios region, approximately 1.2 million hectares of chestnut forest are actively used.
These concessions are privately managed conservation areas, allowing local families to earn a livelihood while preserving the forest. Nuts are harvested sustainably and sold to local processing industries that export them abroad. This activity generates over half of the annual income for thousands of Amazonian families, while simultaneously protecting millions of acres from deforestation and illegal exploitation.
Currently, the Brazil nut market in Peru is valued at over USD $5 million, and due to its environmentally friendly cultivation, it is actively supported by organizations such as the Amazon Conservation Association (ACA).
Jungle Rainforest Adventure
The Amazon rainforest—also known as the tropical forest—is a vast region characterized by high annual rainfall, dense vegetation, and consistently warm temperatures. This environment is home to two-thirds of the world’s plant and animal species, many of which remain scientifically undocumented.
Often referred to as the “Jewels of the Earth” and the “Lungs of the Planet,” rainforests play a crucial role in absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. They are also known as the “World’s Largest Pharmacy” due to the vast number of natural medicines found within them.
