The Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick

tour is one of our premier offerings, meticulously crafted to showcase the best of Tambopata National Reserve.

Tambopata is renowned for its exceptional biodiversity, boasting over 1,500 distinct species of butterflies and 650 species of birds.

Among them are eight species of macaws, including the iconic Scarlet Macaw, which call Tambopata home.

The Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick, also known as the Tambopata Clay Lick, offers a truly unique experience.

Here, hundreds of vibrant macaws, parrots, and parakeets flock to cliffs to consume clay.

This clay is rich in essential salts that aid these birds in detoxifying their bodies.

The name “Tambopata” originates from the Tambopata River,

which rises over 3,900 meters in the snow-capped Pelechuco mountains of the Peruvian-Bolivian highlands before winding its way down to the Peruvian Amazon.

In Quechua, “Tambo” means resting place, and “Pata” means high place.

Within the Tambopata Rainforest resides the Ese Eja, a native indigenous community with a long-standing presence in the region.

The Ese Eja, also known as the huarayo or jungle people, are represented by communities such as Sonene and Infierno.

Traditionally reliant on fishing, farming, and hunting for sustenance, the Ese Eja community is increasingly engaging in tourism activities as an additional source of income.

At Amazon Travel, we actively involve Ese Eja individuals as boatmen and chefs, providing them with opportunities to integrate and thrive within the broader world beyond the Amazon Rainforest.
