Day 1: Welcome to the Amazon – A First Encounter with Nature
Your Amazon rainforest adventure begins with a warm welcome upon arrival at the Puerto Maldonado airport or bus station. Our team will transfer you to our office for a short briefing, then we’ll head to the port to board a boat for a scenic one-hour journey down the majestic Madre de Dios River.
Upon arrival at the lodge, enjoy a refreshing welcome drink made with local tropical fruits. After settling into your private room and taking a short rest, we’ll begin our first rainforest exploration walk. Led by a knowledgeable local guide, you’ll follow trails through ancient trees and spot a stunning variety of wildlife: toucans, parrots, oropendolas, monkeys, snakes, butterflies, and more.
This first immersion in the Tambopata National Reserve—one of Peru’s most vital protected areas, spanning over 278,000 hectares—will offer you a deep connection to the Amazon’s unique biodiversity.
In the afternoon, we’ll visit the famous Monkey Island, home to several monkey species including capuchins, squirrel monkeys, and saddleback tamarins. It’s a perfect opportunity to observe their natural behavior up close.
At night, we’ll set out on a river excursion in search of caimans, using flashlights to scan the riverbanks. With a bit of luck, you might spot a capybara, the world’s largest rodent. The day ends with a delicious traditional dinner and a restful night at the lodge.
Day 2: Lake Sandoval & Amazon Wildlife
After an early breakfast, we’ll board a boat headed for the entrance to Lake Sandoval, one of the Amazon’s most breathtaking natural treasures. After registering at the checkpoint, we’ll embark on a 3-kilometer hike through the jungle to reach the lake, renowned for its beauty and incredible wildlife.
On a rowboat, we’ll glide across its calm waters, observing exotic birds like hoatzins, herons, hawks, and cormorants. Monkeys are also commonly seen, including howlers, squirrel monkeys, and capuchins. With a bit of luck, we may spot the giant river otter, an endangered species, and the black caiman, one of the Amazon’s most powerful predators.
After this enriching adventure, we’ll return to the lodge for a typical Amazonian lunch. In the evening, we’ll take a night walk to discover the hidden side of the jungle: glowing insects, frogs, reptiles, and the mysterious sounds that fill the forest after dark. Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.
Day 3: Sunrise Canopy Walk – A Panoramic View of the Amazon
At 5:30 a.m., we’ll wake early for one of the tour’s highlights: the canopy walk, a network of hanging bridges suspended 30 meters high. This unforgettable experience offers a bird’s-eye view of the rainforest canopy and the Madre de Dios River.
From elevated observation platforms, you’ll witness early-morning bird activity: colorful macaws, toucans, hawks, and more. A truly breathtaking and memorable moment.
Afterward, we’ll return to the lodge for breakfast and prepare for the journey back to Puerto Maldonado, concluding your unforgettable Amazon experience.
