Wild Center – Tambopata Sandoval 3 days
Macaw Behavior Summary: The big-headed macaw (Ara chloropterus) is one of the most common parrot species found near salt flats on the banks of rivers (or licks) in southeastern Peru.
Although common in captivity, there is little information on social interactions in the wild. Licks are ideal sites
for monitoring the behavior of wild birds, even the presence of the lick itself can have
an impact on behavior. We monitored macaws around two licks in the Amazon rainforest.
Macaw behavior was significantly different between birds in trees and birds at the same lick.
The bird’s position in the vegetation around the lick can also impact its behavior, with higher-altitude birds observed more preening and preening partners. Aggression is elevated both in the proximity of the lick and in the lick itself, but the macaws tolerate the presence of neighbors with signs of submission. Whether aggression is a characteristic of individuals or whether interactions serve as a way to sustain their
position of power within the community is unclear. Insects bother scarlet macaws more around their nests than macaws around the lick. Playing, preening, and aggression are observed more around the lick than the nests.
