Located in the Tambopata National Reserve, Lake Sandoval is a protected area and a hotspot for Amazonian wildlife. This pristine lake, often called “Elbow Lake,” is home to the rare giant river otters, as well as tapirs, howler monkeys, turtles, macaws, and caimans.
With over 362 species of birds, 1,200 types of butterflies, and countless other animals, this region offers a true immersion into Amazon biodiversity.
Your base during this 2-day adventure will be the Sandoval Lake Lodge, the only eco-lodge located right on the edge of the reserve. Overlooking the palm-lined waters of Lake Sandoval, the lodge provides:

2-Day Amazon Rainforest Tour: Lake Sandoval Adventure
Tambopata National Reserve | Sandoval Lake Lodge
Day 1: Arrival Rainforest Tours – River Journey – Wildlife Canoe Tour
Arrival in Puerto Maldonado: Meet & greet at the airport/bus terminal. Transfer to our office to store large luggage.
River Transfer: Cruise the Madre de Dios River by motorized canoe. Spot turtles, monkeys, herons, and caimans.
Rainforest Hike: 3 km (~1 hour) guided walk to Lake Sandoval through pristine jungle.
Canoe Ride to Lodge: Paddle across the lake to Sandoval Lake Lodge. Check-in & lunch.
Afternoon Wildlife Tour: Explore the lake by canoe. Look for giant otters, hoatzins, caimans, and colorful birdlife.
Night Safari: Guided evening canoe trip to observe black caimans and nocturnal wildlife.

Day 2: Nature Walk – Return to Town
Early Visit to Macaw Palm Trees: See macaws and parrots

ITINERARY
2-Day Rainforest Tour Itinerary – Lake Sandoval, Tambopata Reserve
Day 1: Puerto Maldonado – Sandoval Lake Lodge – Wildlife Canoe Tour
Upon arrival in Puerto Maldonado, our representative greets you at the airport or bus terminal and transfers you to our local office. Here, you may safely store large luggage and prepare your Amazon jungle adventure with only a daypack.
We then travel by motorized canoe down the Madre de Dios River, where you’ll spot wildlife such as turtles, monkeys, herons, and caimans en route to the Tambopata National Reserve checkpoint.
From there, enjoy a 3 km guided jungle walk (~1 hour) through pristine rainforest to reach the tranquil shores of Lake Sandoval. A short paddle canoe ride brings us to the Sandoval Lake Lodge, your eco-friendly Amazon base.
After lunch and lodge check-in, we return to the lake to observe giant river otters, black caimans, kingfishers, hoatzins (shansho), herons, and other exotic birds and reptiles.
At night, embark on a special evening caiman safari with our expert naturalist guide, who will explain the fascinating nocturnal behavior of these Amazon predators. bird watching

Day 2: Macaw Palm Trees – Wildlife Watching – Return to Puerto Maldonado
We rise early for a magical visit the Palm Tree. Here, you’ll witness vibrant macaws and parrots gathering to feed on the mineral-rich palm clay — a vital part of their diet that aids digestion.
After breakfast back at the lodge, we set off on another nature walk to explore the incredible biodiversity of the Tambopata Reserve. With luck, you may spot monkeys, wild boars, tapirs, or even a spectacled bear. manu wildlife peru
Following lunch, we begin our journey back: paddle across Lake Sandoval, walk back through the forest to the river checkpoint, and board a motorized canoe to return to Puerto Maldonado. Retrieve your stored belongings at our office and transfer to the airport or bus station.
