Tambopata 5-Day Tour: Adventure, Biodiversity and Magic in the Peruvian Amazon

Day 1: Welcome to the Amazon — Observation Tower and Night Safari

After meeting the team, you will begin your transfer to the lodge. Depending on the lodge’s location and river conditions, the journey may combine approximately two hours of overland transportation with a boat ride.

And this is where the landscape truly begins to transform.

The city fades into the distance. Buildings gradually disappear, and the green of the rainforest begins to dominate the horizon.

The journey itself can become your first opportunity to spot birds, mammals, and other Amazonian wildlife.

The Rainforest from Above : Once you have settled into the lodge, your first exploration begins.

A walk of approximately 30 minutes will take you to an observation tower about 50 meters high.

From there, the rainforest takes on an entirely different dimension.

Day 2: Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick — A Spectacle of Color and Sound

In the Amazon, Getting Up Early Has Its Rewards

In Tambopata, the first hours of the day can be magical.

As the forest begins to awaken, the activity of many species also increases.

After an early breakfast or snack, depending on the schedule, you will begin your journey to the Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick, one of the most spectacular places in the region.

The journey may take around one hour, although travel time depends on your starting point and river conditions.

Amazon Peru  Clay Lick Tambopata: A clay lick is a place where certain animal species gather to consume mineral-rich soil or clay.

At the Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick, the activity may begin gradually.

And then the large macaws arrive.

A Change of Scenery: From Upper Tambopata to Lower Tambopata

After exploring the Upper Tambopata area, the program continues toward another part of the region.

The transfer back to Puerto Maldonado and then onward to the second lodge allows you to experience different Amazonian environments and increases your opportunities for nature and adventure activities.

 Yacumama Lake: Piranhas and an Unforgettable Sunset

A new adventure begins in the afternoon.

Yacumama Lake offers a particularly beautiful landscape during the final hours of the day.

Here, you can take part in a recreational piranha fishing experience accompanied by your guide, while exploring the surroundings in search of birds and caimans.

The activity may last approximately three hours, depending on local conditions and the program schedule.

But the most special moment comes at the end.

The sky begins to change color. The water reflects the last light of the day, and the forest takes on golden hues.

Day 3: Sandoval Lake — Discover One of Tambopata’s Great Treasures

 Navigation on the Madre de Dios River

The third day is dedicated to one of the region’s most iconic destinations:

Sandoval Lake : The day begins with approximately 30 minutes of navigation along the Madre de Dios River to the designated entrance area.

Then it is time to head into the rainforest on foot.

 A Hike Where Every Sound Matters : The walk to the lake may take approximately one hour, depending on the group’s pace, trail conditions, and stops for wildlife observation.

Here, it is best to walk slowly.

In the Amazon, looking straight ahead is not always enough.

A movement among the leaves. A sound high above. A branch that has just moved.

With the help of your guide, you will search for different species of monkeys, birds, and other forest inhabitants, while also discovering giant trees and learning how this complex ecosystem works.

 Exploring Sandoval Lake by Boat

When you reach the lake, the landscape changes once again.

You will board a small boat to explore the calm waters of Sandoval while searching for wildlife.

Depending on conditions, you may spot:

Herons ,Taricayas , Monkeys , Water birds , Caimans , Giant river otters, with a great deal of luck.

The giant river otter is one of the animals visitors most hope to see, but its presence cannot be guaranteed.

And perhaps that is part of the magic: every excursion is different.

 Lunch in Front of the Forest : After the first exploration, it is time to relax and enjoy lunch.

Eating beside the lake, surrounded by rainforest, turns a simple break into part of the adventure.

Afterward, you can continue exploring before beginning the return journey.

If conditions are favorable, the way back may offer you another spectacular experience:

an Amazonian sunset over the river.

Day 4: Rainforest Adventuren & Monkeys, Kayaking, Bridges and Ziplining .

After several days of exploration and wildlife watching, Day 4 takes the adventure to the next level.

 Monkey Encounters : The day begins by exploring an area where you may be able to observe different species of Amazonian primates.

Depending on conditions and animal activity, you might encounter:

Capuchin monkeys , Squirrel monkeys , Pichicos , Spider monkeys.

Remember that these are wild animals. Respecting their space is essential to avoid disturbing their natural behavior.

 Kayaking: Experience the Rainforest from the Water

Then it is time to paddle.

Kayaking offers a completely different perspective of the Amazon.

It is not simply about exercise.

The sound of the water, birds along the riverbanks, and the movement of the vegetation create a much more direct sense of connection with the environment.

 Suspension Bridge and Zipline

In the afternoon comes one of the most exciting moments of the trip.

The experience includes:

• A suspension bridge approximately 120 meters long.
• A zipline approximately 190 meters long.

Day 5: Jungle Hikes – Visit to a Native Family, Puerto Maldonado and Airport .

Our final day in the Amazon will take us into the forest to explore the jungle and discover the impressive Amazonian Brazil nut trees (Bertholletia excelsa), which are found throughout much of the Tambopata National Reserve.

We will take a 2- to 3-hour hike along natural trails, where we will have the opportunity to observe trees, plants, and a variety of bird species. We will also learn about the relationship between the Brazil nut tree and Amazonian wildlife, such as the agouti, which helps disperse its seeds. Weather and trail conditions permitting, we may also have the chance to spot macaws among the crowns of the wasai palm trees.

Meeting with a Native Family : We will visit a native family from the Peruvian Amazon to learn firsthand about their customs, traditions, ancestral knowledge, and way of life.

This will be a meaningful cultural exchange, allowing us to discover their close relationship with nature and understand the importance of protecting the forests and preserving their traditions.

At the end of the visit, we will begin our return journey to the city.

END OF OUR EXPEDITION

We conclude our Amazonian adventure after several days of nature, exploration, and cultural encounters.

We will return to the airport to board our domestic flight, taking with us unique memories of the biodiversity and culture of the Peruvian rainforest.

Dia 5: Caminatas en la Selva -Visita Familia Nativa  Puerto Maldonado y Aeropuerto .

Nuestra última jornada en la Amazonía nos llevará a explorar el bosque y conocer los imponentes castaños amazónicos (Bertholletia excelsa), presentes en gran parte de la Reserva Nacional Tambopata.

Realizaremos una caminata de 2 a 3 horas por senderos naturales, donde podremos observar árboles, plantas y diversas especies de aves. También conoceremos la relación entre la castaña y la fauna amazónica, como el añuje, que ayuda a dispersar sus semillas. Si las condiciones lo permiten, podremos observar guacamayos entre las copas de las palmeras wasai.
ENCUENTRO CON UNA FAMILIA NATIVA

Visitaremos a una familia nativa de la Amazonía peruana para conocer de cerca sus costumbres, tradiciones, conocimientos ancestrales y forma de vida.
