Day 1: From Puerto Maldonado to Tambopata Lodge Inn

Your wildlife adventure begins as we pick you up from the bus terminal or airport in Puerto Maldonado. Our journey takes us to the main office for registration, where you can leave unnecessary items and pack essentials for the 5-day tour (or 3-day tour, as per your itinerary). Setting off at 8:30 a.m., we embark on a private 2-hour road trip to the Tambopata port.

Here, our waiting boat and skilled guide are ready to accompany us along the Tambopata River. During this 50-minute boat ride, keep your eyes peeled for diverse wildlife, from birds and turtles to capybaras and white alligators. If luck is on our side, we might even catch a glimpse of the majestic jaguar basking in the sun on a riverbank.

Arriving at “TAMBOPATA LODGE INN,” we extend a warm welcome, complete with a typical Amazonian aphrodisiac refreshment. You’ll settle into your comfortable room and enjoy a hearty lunch. In the afternoon, we embark on a forest walk amidst ancient trees, encountering an array of creatures like insects, spiders, toads, butterflies, monkeys, and various mammals.

After dinner, we embark on an enchanting nocturnal boat expedition to observe alligators, capybaras, and perhaps elusive felines that emerge for their nocturnal hunts. Following this exciting activity, it’s time to rest in your cozy room at the lodge.

Day 2: From Wildlife Nature – Clay Lick to Sandoval Lake Reserve

Awaken to the melodious songs of birds and the possibility of hearing howler monkeys greeting the day. After a delightful breakfast, we embark on a 20-minute river journey, followed by a 2-hour drive back to Puerto Maldonado. Here, you can leave unnecessary items and prepare for the upcoming adventure to the Sandoval Lake Reserve.

At the port, our motorboat awaits. We’ll navigate along the Madre de Dios River for approximately 45 minutes, reaching the control post of the Sandoval del Tambopata Lake Reserve, where we’ll register. This marks the start of a 1-hour 30-minute trek through stops, allowing us to observe various plant and animal species, from plants and birds to insects, butterflies, and monkeys.

Next, we’ll board a canoe at a small port, embarking on a narrow canal journey through the forest, eventually leading us to the open waters of Lake Sandoval. This scenic route offers a breathtaking view of water and towering palm trees, echoing with mysterious sounds from hidden creatures. Our accommodation, just a 4-minute boat ride from the Sandoval Lake port, awaits.

Settle into your private room with shower and bath, and after a brief respite, we embark on an exploration of the local flora and fauna, observing species in their natural habitat. Following dinner, we embark on a thrilling nighttime walk, equipped with lanterns or headlamps, to encounter the nocturnal monkey (Musmuqui), frogs, snakes, and active night insects. Your night will be spent in the comfort of your rooms at the lodge.

Day 3: From Sandoval Lake Reserve to Puerto Maldonado

Rise early, around 4:30 to 5:00 a.m., to visit the breathtaking palm tree lick. Here, you’ll witness Amazon’s ambassadors—the macaws, parrots, and parakeets—in action. This unique location offers a rare glimpse of these birds tearing into palm trunks to access vital nutrients.

Returning to the lodge, indulge in a hearty breakfast and a brief rest before our activities resume. We’ll explore the “route of the giant trees,” encountering a diverse array of tree species, including those of economic importance to the region. Learn about the uses of medicinal plants by indigenous and local communities.

Before breakfast, we’ll embark on an exciting quest to observe and photograph the elusive Giant River Otters in Sandoval Lake, one of the rainforest’s most endangered mammals, known for their fascinating behavior.

Following breakfast with local families, we’ll cross the lake, embarking on our final walk through yet another pristine primary forest. Encounter lianas, palm trees, and myriad other wonders, with plenty of opportunities for discussion and questions.

You’ll even have a chance to swim in the lake before enjoying lunch. We’ll then board our canoe, followed by a trek and the main boat along the Madre de Dios River, returning to Puerto Maldonado .
