Amazon Green Tambopata 4 days: for those with limited time in jungle trips but still wanting to experience a rich and remarkable
section of the Amazon Rainforest the beautiful Sandoval Lake Lodge
in the lower section of the Tambopata National Reserve is an
excellent choice. Here we present an extended version of our 4 day
itinerary with a highly recommended extra day to make the most of this wildlife rich rainforest environment in amazon green.
This Tambopata Eco lodge is easily accessible from the friendly and
fascinating jungle town of Puerto Maldonado, a major centre of the
timber, gold mining and eco-tourism industries in the Southern Peruvian Amazon. Puerto Maldonado is itself easily accessed from
Lima and Cusco due to excellent local air links. From Puerto Maldonado our lodge is approximately 3 hours away and the
journey – a thirty minute boat ride, followed by a short jungle hike
and finally a paddle to our jungle home by catamaran – is fascinating
in itself. Lago Sandoval is an ox-bow lake, a curve of the Madre de
Dios River cut off by the river changing course. These quiet and beautiful habitats are wonderful places for wildlife watching,
whether exploring the Tambopata National Reserve lake in silence
by catamaran, with only the sound of our craft’s paddles for
company, or walking trails with experienced nature guides through diverse forest habitats.
Travel Itinerary Tambopata and Lago Sandoval
Begin your adventure with a flight to Puerto Maldonado from Lima or Cusco. Upon arrival, you will be warmly greeted by your naturalist guide. From there, you will be transferred to a dugout canoe for a scenic trip up the Tambopata River to the lodge. During this journey, you will notice the vegetation transition from colonized, deforested areas to pristine virgin rainforest.
A box lunch will be provided on board, ensuring you stay energized. Upon reaching the lodge, you’ll enjoy a refreshing welcome drink and meet the dedicated staff. In the late afternoon, prepare for an introductory walk into the “terra firme” forest behind the lodge (Trail 2). This area is dominated by towering Brazil-nut and Dipteryx trees, offering the chance to spot various wildlife, including Saddle-back Tamarins, Brown Capuchins, and Blue-Morpho butterflies.
After dinner, embark on a night walk to search for nocturnal animals, utilizing your guide’s expertise to spot wildlife by eye shine—approximately 50% of rainforest creatures are active at night.
Start your day with an early breakfast. Then, you and your nature guide will board a motorized canoe for a short journey to the trailhead. Prepare to explore the lake system of Condenado by foot and paddle canoe, where you will discover a rich array of bird and aquatic life. Keep your eyes peeled for a family of Giant Otters, which are often seen in the area.
As you navigate the lake, expect to encounter diverse bird species, such as Rufescent Tiger-herons, Great Egrets, and the lively Hoatzin. Don’t forget your hat and sunscreen, as there is limited shade on the water. You will return to the lodge in time for lunch.
In the afternoon, you will continue your adventure upstream for a two-hour journey to the isolated Macaw & Parrot Clay Lick known as “EL CHUNCHO.” This area is famous for its clay cliffs lining the Tambopata River.
After dinner, join a guided night walk along the riverbanks in search of wildlife, including Capybaras, Caimans, Tapirs, and the elusive Jaguar. Enjoy camping on the beach near El Chuncho (B, L, D).
On this day, a pre-dawn start is essential to reach the clay lick before the birds arrive. The clay lick is a gathering place for numerous birds, including various macaws and smaller parrots, such as Scarlet, Blue-and-Yellow, and Chestnut-fronted parrots. Witness this remarkable spectacle as the birds come in search of minerals and salts.
Following a late morning hike, you will return downstream to the lodge for lunch. In the evening, prepare for another exciting adventure as you search for Caimans and other nocturnal animals by canoe along the Tambopata River. Spend the night in comfort at the Lodge (B, L, D).
It’s time to depart. Your return to Puerto Maldonado is scheduled according to the group’s flight times. In the morning, take advantage of the active wildlife, including howler monkeys and various bird species. Your guide will assist you during your arrival in Puerto Maldonado and provide transportation to the airport for your flight.

After lunch, a short break, and In the afternoon, we will explore the primary jungle full of ancient trees where many creatures such as insects, spiders, ants, toads, butterflies, monkeys, and some mammals live, etc.
After dinner, we will take a night activity with our outboard boat. For this activity, we will need to bring flashlights to observe caimans, capybaras, and perhaps a feline near the river at night that naturally hunts at night. Return to our lodge to rest in your respective room.
Today we will wake up early at 5:00 a.m., where we will take our boat to travel down the Tambopata River for 30 minutes.
Enjoying a wonderful sunrise with the opportunity to see the king of the jungle (jaguar) or anaconda on the banks of our Tambopata National Reserve.

The clay lick is very close; you won’t even need to zoom in on your cameras. As the sun rises over the ancient trees, an explosion of life and color will burst before our eyes as hundreds of parrots and dozens of macaws eat clay to balance their pH correctly. In groups of two and three, the greedy red macaws and scarlet macaws come flapping their wings, landing in the main part of the trees. The macaws will eventually decide to come down and put on a colorful and noisy display on the bare shores, getting all the clay they can from the surface. As they delight, we will have the unique opportunity to enjoy an extraordinary healthy breakfast while watching the show (so yes, sit down and relax).
After this activity, we will take our boat back to our lodge, have lunch and rest. In the afternoon, we will take a walk to explore the flora and fauna of the Tambopata Reserve where we will encounter a great diversity of species in their natural habitat.
Return to our lodge to enjoy a delicious dinner. We will wake up to the songs of the birds and howler monkeys, have breakfast, and then embark on our outboard boat for 30 minutes downstream from the Tambopata where we will make a stop at the Gato String. We will do artisanal fishing such as catfish, sábalos, sardines, paco, etc. Then we will explore the magical jungle where different species live naturally. After this activity, we will visit a stream where you can enjoy or take a refreshing swim in its clean and crystal clear waters with a very beautiful landscape. In the afternoon, after lunch, we will take hikes and then visit the mammal clay lick, where we will probably have better chances of finding howler monkeys, deer, wild pigs, and some other mammals that come to eat the clay because it contains many mineral salts and sodium that they eat every day to have good digestion during the day the mammals and birds eat; stems, flowers, roots, leaves, green and poisonous fruits. From there we will return to our lodge to enjoy our delicious dinner. Then we will have a bonfire, our guide will tell you stories and legends about the magical jungle and answer some of your questions. After this activity, we will return to our lodge to rest in their respective rooms. Availability of shower and bathroom in our lodge.
Today we will wake up very early for breakfast and then have free time for a bath and photographs. After this activity, we will pack our backpacks and head to the port to board the outboard boat and continue our journey down the TAMBOPATA river to the port where our transportation awaits us for the return journey to the city and port of Maldonado and then transfer to the land terminal / airport.

important source of dietary sodium and helps neutralize the plant toxins in their diet. In this article I provide data on the seasonal patterns of clay lick use by parrots at Amazon Expedition . I then show how parrot “migrations,”
breeding and diet maybe interacting to produce these seasonal changes in lick use in Amazon Expedition.

Peru is a large department (or state) in the wild, southeastern part of the country. Its name means “Mother of God” and is a common Spanish synonym for “the Virgin Mary”. The rather generic name given to the Madre de Dios department in Peru Nature Tambopata is a reflection of how little was known about the region during the Spanish colonial era. Whereas some departments were assigned the same name used by the Incans, neither Incan people nor Spanish colonists settled in the southeastern Amazonian lowlands so the department was simply named in honor of one of the most revered figures in Roman Catholicism (the principle religion of the Spanish colonists) .

The name Tambopata originates from the iconic Tambopata River, which flows down from the snow-capped Pelechuco mountains in
the Peruvian-Bolivian highlands. With an altitude exceeding 3,900
meters, the river descends into the lush Amazon rainforest. In
Quechua, “Tambo” translates to “resting place,” while “Pata” means “high place,” reflecting the region’s natural beauty.
The Tambopata Rainforest is also home to the Ese Eja, an indigenous community that has thrived in this rich environment for
generations. Meaning “jungle people,” the Ese Eja include the communities of Sonene and Infierno. Traditionally reliant on
fishing, farming, and hunting, they are now embracing tourism, allowing visitors to learn about their culture and way of life.
At Tambopata Lodge, we proudly employ members of the Ese Eja as boatmen and chefs, giving them opportunities to share their
unique knowledge and traditions while introducing them to the broader world beyond the Amazon Peru Rainforest.
